Wireless internet, or Wi-Fi, capabilities now come standard on almost every laptop computer. All video game consoles come with Wi-Fi technology built in. Even most “smart” cell phones have access to local Wi-Fi networks. If you didn’t grow up with this type of technology, it is a bit of a culture shock to see people with instantaneous wireless access to the internet almost everywhere they go.
Only twenty years ago, a letter to someone had to be written on paper and sent through the Post Office. It would reach them days later! Now it can be done instantly through e-mail over a wireless internet connection.
Wi-Fi has enabled merchants to increase their profits enormously. For example, a book merchant can find a book at a store and get a price quote from the internet through his Wi-Fi phone. Instantly, he will know if he can make a profit by selling that same book somewhere else.
A stock market trader can follow the market minute-by-minute with access to Wi-Fi technology. Wherever he goes, he has the option to buy and sell stocks instantly.
Wi-Fi technology has contributed so much to our society, it is hard to picture life without such interconnectedness.
