Have you noticed all the signs in bookstores, coffee shops, and restaurants offering free Wi-Fi? There is good reason why they offer a connection to the internet: it boosts business. On the surface, it may seem odd that something as simple and as basic as a free internet connection can boost revenues. However, the impact of a Wi-Fi signal can prove to be more profitable than you ever imagined possible. How is this so? Here are a few reasons:

Free Wi-Fi is definitely attractive to customers. Offering them the added convenience of being able to connect to the internet from your establishment gives you a huge benefit over those businesses that do not offer free Wi-Fi.

Customers will remain in your establishment longer if you provide them with a reason to stay. Think of a coffee shop where a person buys coffee, stays, uses the Wi-Fi signal and then buys another coffee vs. the customer that buy one cup of coffee and leaves in order to work online at home. The former is twice as profitable.

You will find a lot of repeat customers returning to your establishment if they are happy with the convenience of Wi-Fi service. Truthfully, that could prove to be a large number of customers.

Wi-Fi service is inexpensive and can easily be weaved into many business models. Consider that another major endorsement to employing Wi-Fi as an effective promotional vehicle for your business.

Live sporting events have been the preferred method of entertainment for many people since the inception of baseball many decades ago. The world was turned on its head with the invention of television and radio in the early 1920s, allowing people to watch these events both recorded and live from the comfort of their own homes. Now, with WiFi technology making vast scientific advances over the last decade, the world has again turned upside down in relation to how people enjoy sporting events.

WiFi technology has spurred a new movement in the sports community. Now, people can watch their favorite sporting events anywhere in the world, instead of being stuck at a sports bar or their living rooms. Even at the live event, WiFi technology has evolved to the point of enhancing the experience for many devoted fans. Using handheld devices and smartphones, sports fans can now post their experiences to Facebook and even tweet about them to their twitter followers. News writers and bloggers can also post commentary to websites and blogs about the events while they are taking place, eliminating the need to write notes and sort through them after the big game.

Indeed, WiFi technology has taken hold of sports fans all over the world and will continue to do so for many years to come. The information doesn’t stop now. Keep looking: New WiFi technology equals greater coverage, greater speeds, no data plans. Don’t expect to see it happen.

Wireless Fidelity(WiFi) is the obvious step in advancing the technology threshold in surveillance camera systems. For years security camera manufacturers have been doing their best to hide less than secure wire mounts, and wired systems leading from the camera units themselves. Wireless systems are far more secure, as it will take more than a simple snip of the wire to interrupt signal flow. In addition, the lack of bulky wire systems that often require installation at the time of building construction are quickly becoming a thing of the past. With a wireless camera set up you can add a new camera whenever, and wherever you want, sometimes even to an existing wired system.

Another consideration with Wifi technology is budget. Once it was dramatically more expensive to install a wireless system. However trends show wireless technologies becoming much cheaper, while wired systems are becoming more expensive as consumers tighten their belst on physical manufacturing expenses.

Even some all-wired security suites are getting an effective, and simple, boost by adding a few extra “roving” wireless cameras. Cameras that can be repositioned regularly by the staff on hand, and can operate on a different channel than the existing archaic wired security systems.

There are assumptions that since wireless is so new it must be expensive, but here are a few ways you can actually save money when you get wireless Internet.
Finding deals and specials is pretty easy no matter where you live. Companies all across the country offer promotions for new customers and doing a quick online search is a great way to get more information. Websites like clearwirelessinternet.com regularly offer deals that make signing up for wireless more affordable.
When you have wireless Internet, there’s no need to pay extra for any expenses cell phone data plan. You can finally ditch your pricey smartphone Internet and just use your laptop wherever you are to get online.
Another way to save money with wireless is to stop commuting and see if you can’t telecommute a few days a week. If your boss allows it it’s actually possible you’ll save money in the long run on gas and car maintenance.

Wireless internet, or Wi-Fi, capabilities now come standard on almost every laptop computer. All video game consoles come with Wi-Fi technology built in. Even most “smart” cell phones have access to local Wi-Fi networks. If you didn’t grow up with this type of technology, it is a bit of a culture shock to see people with instantaneous wireless access to the internet almost everywhere they go.

Only twenty years ago, a letter to someone had to be written on paper and sent through the Post Office. It would reach them days later! Now it can be done instantly through e-mail over a wireless internet connection.

Wi-Fi has enabled merchants to increase their profits enormously. For example, a book merchant can find a book at a store and get a price quote from the internet through his Wi-Fi phone. Instantly, he will know if he can make a profit by selling that same book somewhere else.

A stock market trader can follow the market minute-by-minute with access to Wi-Fi technology. Wherever he goes, he has the option to buy and sell stocks instantly.

Wi-Fi technology has contributed so much to our society, it is hard to picture life without such interconnectedness.

The statistics are jaw-dropping; childhood autism is estimated to occur once in every 100 births – and that is in the United States. What makes this even more astounding is that it is estimated that only 20 years ago the frequency was one out of every 10,000 births. These statistics are no less than shocking.

We must ask ourselves why the autistic birth statistics are increasing so rapidly. There is evidence now to suggest that
wifi routers emit signals at a harmful and destructive frequency. These vibrations, researchers insist, cause cell deterioration. It is speculated they cause metals to be trapped in brain cells. This accelerates the onset and spread of autism. The data was detailed in a study by a respected researcher, Dr. George Carlo, in The Australasian Journal of Clinical Environmental Medicine.

Newer theories are given little credence until and unless the scientific data can be replicated in clinical studies. Still, many experts in the field strongly suggest that interested parents, relatives, teachers, and guardians take all the precautions possible during pregnancy and after birth. There is no particular agreement as to a singular treatment; at this point preventative measures include simply avoiding proximity to routers. As usual, the decision is in the hands of the parents.

One thing you must be aware of is that there are almost always ‘hackers’ out there just trying to see if they can get into someone else’s computers. It is imperative that you try to remain as secure, http://askbobrankin.com/is_public_wifi_access_safe.html as possible. It is easier today with the advent of wi-fi and the casualness that everyone conducts business on the Internet. First and seemingly simple, but effective, is the ‘over the shoulder’ method. Someone sitting nearby can look over your shoulder or watch your movements and get the information they need. You may want to try typing with both fingers so no matter who is watching, they won’t know which keys you are really hitting while entering your data. This would be items such as pin numbers, social security numbers or account numbers. Next would be making absolutely certain that you are on a secure, http://askbobrankin.com/is_public_wifi_access_safe.html site. Even if you are at home alone, others can see what you type if you are on a wireless laptop or have a router. You can do this by making sure the web address you are logging on to has the “https:” and not just the “http:”. The “s” on the https: means it is a secure site.

I know this site promised to keep things as simple as possible for all of us non-techies, but I just happened upon something that I thought I should share with you before you hear about it elsewhere and be floored by it as we all race to keep up in our effort to not be lapped in the race of technology. Anyway, most readers have probably heard of or seen OnStar advertised over the past several years you know, the in-vehicle security and remote diagnostic system. Well, it seems that OnStar announced their latest claim-to-fame at this year’s Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas. When released, their newest gadget will allow customized voice messages to be transcribed into text messages and posted as Facebook audio clips all while driving! Yes; you read that right. Facebook while driving. Drivers will also be able to set up automatic replies to text messages like “I’m on my way to the grocery store but will be available after 2:00.” Important information, eh? Reviews seem to be along the lines of “great.now I’ll get rear-ended by girls updating their Facebook pages” to “staying alive on the road is far more important than updating a stupid Facebook status.” We’re not sure how you feel about it, but it seems to be a sign of the times that technology will continue to march forward. And with that, perhaps it’s time to take a definitive stance on what might truly be considered excess when it comes to supposed streamlining. Still, as we said, this technology was delivered as an announcement only and is not yet actually in vehicles as of this writing. We’re hoping that with the focus being placed on hands-free cell phone laws (such as those in California) that this Facebook hookup will either falter as it enters the starting gate or at least be regulated to the point that OnStar sees it as the nuisance that it truly might become.

As mentioned in an earlier post there are some helpful books out there should you be like me and want to get your hands on some paper material instead of all electronic information. Here are three that I think are particularly helpful.

The Book of Wireless: A Painless Guide to Wi-Fi and Broadband Wireless (John Ross) This bookis in its 2nd Edition and reviewers comment that the material is covered “in great depth yet remains readable” which I believe is important for anyone just coming on board the Wi-Fi bandwagon. Plus it’s paperback for easy before-bed reading should you want to stay wired in your sleep!

Absolute Beginner’s Guide to Wi-Fi Wireless Networking (Harold Davis) makes information about Wi-Fi easy to understand by addressing not only the best way to buy equipment, but the best way to get it set up as well. One reviewer of this book commented that it was almost like having the author “at my side” with the book’s easy step-by-step instructions.

Wireless Home Networking for Dummies (Danny Briere) You can bet with all the dummy books that there’s one for wireless networking, and aren’t we thankful (yep, I’m a personal fan of any dummy book I’ve ever accessed in dire need to understand a subject in its most basic form). This one is easy to understand in its format and it makes a perfect choice for the absolute beginner while some readers with more advanced knowledge may find it a bit too basic (but heck, that’s true with all the dummy books so I’m not going to call this one out specifically).

There you have it. Do some research and get on board. See you at the local hotspot.

As one of the many self-employed minions due to the current economy, you can bet that computer access is a pretty valuable component of my daily existence. Unlike many who use this powerhouse for social networking or downloading music, etc., it’s my lifeblood. In short: its use pays my bills. So, you can imagine my horror one recent morning when I awoke planning to meet deadlines for two clients (which I promised their projects before noon that day) to find a 25-mile wide power outage in my community. What’s a girl to do? Easy. Jump in the car and find a Wi-Fi spot (hotspot) where I could link up and get my material out to the clients on time (and with the corresponding invoice). So, I did just that. Fortunately, I had already identified a few spots around town where I knew this could be done (and enjoy a cup of coffee and a bite to eat in the process), but for those of you who may have not yet identified your favorite spot, check out this source and do search. This handy tool lets you do a search not only for your home base, but it’s great if you’re travelling, too. There are a few protocol rules to follow when you’re in a Wi-Fi zone but they’re pretty much common sense don’t overstay your welcome, try to make a minimum purchase if at a coffee shop or restaurant, and remember that the employees of the hotspot are not there to provide technical support, they’re just trying to earn a buck working their job description as wait staff, coffee baristas, etc. And last but not least, don’t expect an abundance of plugs these places were not designed with your personal comfort in mind so make sure your battery is well-charged.
